Measuring in at 3’3″ x 5’3″, this vintage Persian Balouchi carpet dates back to 1950. It remains in great vintage condition because of the knowledge and skill of its weaver. She worked with handspun wool and vegetable dyes so as not to degrade the quality of the raw wool. She then used an exceptionally fine weave so that the carpet would not wear down with use. What really sets this carpet apart, however, is its impressive design.
The pattern in this vintage Persian Balouchi carpet is born from a combination of two important Persian motifs. First, the green latticework in the field represents the ‘tree of life’. Within this framework lies another quintessential Persian motif – the garden. A repetition of alternating flowers and butterflies sit within the grid. Despite the lack of perspective, the relationship between these the two central motifs gives the carpet dimension. The color palate of warm reds, cool purples, blues, and greens increases the depth and dimension of the rug. With all of these colors and various designs coexisting on a small canvas, it remains balanced and full of spirit, never busy or distracting.
