Staff Pick – Shirvan Crimson

Shirvan Crimson forms part of Orley Shabahang’s Tribal Revival collection. This series reignites Caucasian designs from the 18th and 19th century with brighter, naturally-dyed woolen yarns. The design for Shirvan Crimson specifically comes from present day Azerbaijan. Traditionally, handwoven Shirvan carpets are more complex and sophisticated than other Caucasian rugs. They also often have multi-medallion designs because they were originally woven in a long and narrow format.

Shirvan Crimson is a geometric Caucasian design that has two symmetrical medallions with floral motifs. Its yarn colors include rust orange alongside, sea green, sky blue, yellow, and light cream.

The history behind this design is only one of the reasons why the Orley Shabahang team loves this carpet! We have also fallen hard for its color palette that brings the colors of fall to life. Its warm toned deep orange and vibrant yellow are enriched when contrasted by the carpet’s sky blue and turquoise green. These colors complement the balanced geometric floral motifs. Two symmetrical central medallions compose a floral motif within a cross framework. This is then surrounded by a several multi-banded border. Using these rich naturally-dyed colors further accentuates the harmony in these mirrored angular forms.

Whether you have a house filled with the treasures of antiquity or a mid-century modern inspired home, this bright tribal rug lends itself well to a variety of styles. And if you love this handmade Persian carpet as much as we do, you can find Shirvan Crimson at your local Orley Shabahang retailer!
