Staff Pick – Quasar
Orley Shabahang’s Galaxy collection turns out showstopper after showstopper. This week’s staff pick Quasar is no different. Continue reading to learn why we love this handmade Persian carpet.
Orley Shabahang’s Galaxy collection stands out in its technical prowess as well as its stunning beauty. Many of its most popular designs, such as Synergy and Magma, have been published time and time again in magazines across the world. This week, however, we look at a lesser known handmade carpet from this collection. Quasar is arguably the most difficult carpet to weave in the Galaxy series. Because of our unrivaled artisan weavers, however, it was executed impeccably.
The carpet’s canvas illustrates a psychedelic, asymmetrical play on the traditional medallion design. These detailed amoeba-like shapes could not be as delightful without the proper execution of knotting Orley Shabahang’s vegetable-dyed yarn. The ability to discern shades of the same color is the most impressive skill of this carpet’s weavers. Persian handknotted carpets such as Quasar are woven row by row. This means that Orley Shabahang’s artisan weavers must pull the right color and tone for every knot to achieve this seamless shading. They must take in the slightest differences in the midrange blues, soft greens, rusty oranges, and warm yellows. Only someone with real weaving artistry can attain such a marvelous outcome. The craft of creating these organic shapes without pixelation links the form and function of the carpet with its beauty.
