Measuring 3’ x 5’1”, this hand-knotted carpet inspired by traditional Caucasian designs belongs to Orley Shabahang’s Tribal Revival Collection. The vivid shades of orange, green, blue, indigo, and light blue originate from organic vegetable dyes, which are vivid and fade resistant. Starting from the center, we encounter a rectangular motif that’s surrounded by two large crab-like medallions in green and indigo wool. The square motif in the center, known as the” hooked cross, “symbolizes happiness. The medallions’ detailing in shades of green, cream, blue, and orange provides fabulous contrast and clarity from the carpet’s field. Moving outward, we find multiple variants of the Tree of Life design found ascending on the carpet’s sides. Encompassing the tribal-themed field is a detailed and interconnecting, multi-level border. Done with green, blue, orange, and cream outlining, numerous additional birds, flower, leaf, and vine motifs reside within the border. What makes this carpet truly versatile comes from the carpet’s size, design, and color palette. The combination of these attributes allows this carpet to coexist perfectly as a bedroom carpet, a living room carpet, or as an entryway piece.
