Antique Senneh

Collection: ,

This Persian Senneh carpet created circa 1900 consists of a pure wool pile, cotton warp and thread and natural vegetable dyes. Woven by order of the Governor of Sanandaj (present-day Kurdistan), this carpet was created to showcase the beauty of his home’s natural surroundings, and depicts the flowers that would bloom in the river’s shallow waters every spring. The flowers exhibit beautiful red tones against a rich blue background, balanced by the carpet’s detailed border. The carpet’s design and coloration as well as its size are rather unusual characteristics given the piece’s provenance. At the time it was created, most rugs in Sanandaj weren’t much larger than approximately 5′ x 7′, indicating the power and wealth of the person who commissioned this work. The carpet is in good antique condition.
