Antique Kazak Runner

Collection:

This antique Kazak runner circa 1880 in pure handspun wool and vegetable dyes features a central garden design composed of five four-part medallions. Its geometric composition achieves an organic fluidity through its floral motifs and sophisticated use of color. The multiple-banded border is particularly intricate, and patterns of four appear throughout the design to represent the four elements of nature, that is, earth, wind, water, and fire. The vegetal derived colors also reflect those found in the weaver’s natural surroundings, with light and deep blues, earthy reds, subtle greens, and contrasting yellows. Undyed cream wools balance the border and bring further contrast to the design elements of the central medallions and encompassing field. The proportion and scale are well balanced throughout the piece, adding to the high level of sophistication prevalent throughout this carpet’s conception and execution. This carpet is in great antique condition, with its naturally aged colors further emphasizing the depth of its design. The size is 4’2″ x 10’11”.
