Any onlooker is sure to get lost in the asymmetrical dreamscape of Orley Shabahang’s Synergy carpet. Ever wonder what designer Bahram Shabahang sees in his abstract creation? Continue reading to find out.

The Synergy carpet is one of Orley Shabahang’s most popular designs. It is a staple of our ethereal Galaxy Collection. As with all of this collection’s designs, the Synergy carpet is born from a simple yet profound idea. Existence is boundless, and thus everything from the tiny atom to the expansive universe is related. Ultimately, this is because the building block of all things is energy. Here, Shabahang is establishing the visual connection between the fractal pattern of a split atom and the cosmic quality of a galaxy.

This 12' x 15'6" version of Orley Shabahang's Synergy carpet displays its asymmetrical yet balanced fractalesque swirls and creeping vines in icy blue, ocean blue, navy, soft peach, rose gold, and various shades of warm and natural green tones.

A key aspect of the Synergy carpet’s mesmerizing illustration is its balanced asymmetry. This again reflects the energetic feature of the atom, and consequently all things. An atom submits to its axis. It holds balance with its center. Despite this fact, however, it has no boundaries or perfect symmetry. The Synergy carpet has no outlines so as to achieve this sense visually. Each color bleeds into the next with no delineated borders. This is atypical for a Persian carpet – a showing of the true craftsmanship and technical expertise on the part of our artisan weavers. Furthermore, the vegetable dyed handspun yarn is vital in adding to the illusion of boundlessness. The depth of color reflected in a chemical-free dye helps achieve the desired effect of the carpet’s undulating form.

One of the magnificent things about this rug is that its abstract forms recall different manifestations for different people. Shabahang took inspiration from the movement of color over a seafloor when choosing the original blue and green colorway. Each space, however, has its own specifications. As such, Orley Shabahang is proud to be able to offer its customers custom sizes and color palettes for any of its handmade carpets. Because everything is done by hand and follows centuries-old practices, no two Synergy carpets are the same. Whether it is the scale of the swirls or the color of wool, our completely handcrafted process ensures that each of our carpets is one-of-a-kind.
