Inspiration Everywhere – Butterfly Dreams
Orley Shabahang’s Butterfly Dreams evokes visually exactly what its name implies literally. This week we discuss the revelation behind this design’s floating dreamscape.
Butterfly Dreams is part of Orley Shabahang’s Art Nouveau collection. Like many Art Nouveau designs, it takes its inspiration from the natural world and presents it as a series of flowing curves. The undulating movements in this handmade carpet come from the creative mind of designer Bahram Shabahang.
Here he mimics a picturesque scene he had once witnessed. While by the ocean, he saw a kaleidoscope of butterflies fluttering over the water. The butterflies are woven into the field of the carpet while the center depicts the coral on the ocean floor. This memory stayed with Shabahang as a reminder of the coexistence of nature. Like the creation of a true Persian carpet, this spectacle manifested the harmony of existence.
One interesting aspect of this piece is its use of perspective. Butterfly Dreams magnifies the scale of the starfish and coral at the bottom of the ocean. This is similar to a real-life occurrence. Light travels on a straight trajectory. When it is reflected on water, however, it bounces in all different directions. As such, the light bouncing off of the water makes the object within it look larger. This play on scale maintains visual balance between the figures in the carpet’s border and the figures in the carpet’s field.
