This 1880s Shirvan rug consists of a handspun wool warp, weft and pile and its soft yet rich blues, reds and golds were all created using organic vegetable dyes. The coloration of this carpet is truly unique and exceptional for a piece of its age and origin.
Shown throughout the field are stylized birds, butterflies and leopards and the rug’s multiple borders work to balance these motifs as well as the geometric medallions in the center.
It is a one-of-a-kind improvisational carpet and remains in excellent condition for an antique of its age.
